Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) is the disorder of kidney in which kidney fails to work properly. In chronic renal failure the kidney fails to remove wastes, concentrate urine, and conserve electrolytes. Chronic renal failure is observed in the individuals having the kidney problems. Occurrence of chronic renal failure is observed mainly in the middle-aged and older individuals. Diabetes mellitus, Diseases of the heart or lungs, polycystic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, certain cancers, autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus, high blood pressure, and obstructions of the urinary tract are the causes of chronic renal failure. According to the latest study scientists have linked chronic renal failure to erectile dysfunction. They claimed that 50% of individuals having chronic renal failure suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Patients with chronic renal failure experience a significant decrease in quality of life because of the limitations imposed by the disease as well as the demands of the treatment that they receive. Factors such as age, anxiety and depressive complaints, and dyslipidemy seem to play an important role in the origin of erectile dysfunction in the patients suffering from chronic renal failure. Scientists were trying to find out the relationship between the erectile dysfunction and chronic renal failure since 1975 but no confirmatory evidence was observed by the scientists. The resent research gave confirmatory evidence about the prevalence of erectile dysfunction in the patients with chronic renal failure.
To find out the relationship between the erectile dysfunction and chronic renal failure, the group of scientists conducted a study in which the 200 men suffering with the chronic renal failure were put for the questionnaire regarding their sex-life. It was observed that 100 men out of 200 were found to be suffering from the erectile dysfunction. The causes of erectile dysfunction observed due to chronic renal failure are multifactorial, and among the most probable causes are autonomous neuropathy, diminished concentration of testosterone, hyperprolactinemia, vascular disease of the penile arteries and veins, medication use, and psychogenic factors.
It was observed that the men suffering with chronic renal failure suffered from the lack of blood supply to the penis during the sexual activity because of the improper functioning of kidney. Thus, men having chronic renal failure suffered from the erectile dysfunction. The other major reason for erectile dysfunction was the contraction of the arteries in the penile region and thus the less amount of blood supply to the penis. Thus, men were getting less amount of blood supply to the penis during the sexual stimulation and caused erectile dysfunction.
This study showed that the prevalence of erectile dysfunction in patients with chronic renal failure is high (57.9%). The age factor, as in other groups studied in the literature, was shown to be the main variable associated in patients with chronic renal failure. Alterations in the levels of high-density lipoprotein and other factors such as anxiety and depressive complaints appear to play an important part in the origin of erectile dysfunction in patients with chronic renal failure. Thus, from this article we can conclude that erectile dysfunction is associated closely with chronic renal failure
