I got the shots that I had promised myelf: moments with the rare and fabulous Torrent Duck, which inhabits Rio Viedma.
She showed up in form, coasting and submerging with her 3 babies. Her grey, earthen and white plumage mask a foraging existence: the granite shadows and the water’s depth the only cover.
This species is only found, if you are lucky, in rapid glacial currents of Patagonia. Unfortunately, my back got spun out of alignment while crossing a relatively shallow but deceptively fast section of the river in my pursuit. I looked forward to killing the pain within about an hour and a half.
Our expedition Doc brings no prescription Tramadol in the medicine kit to deal with moderate to severe pain. A minor fall myself. I felt way too chilly though in my now soaked duds. The horizontal blown pines above me had traded their emerald hues, now wizardish silhouettes.
Must have been a bit tired because I had risen at 4:00 am to scramble down to the riverbank and intercept December’s sunrise miracle. I actually caved in but caught the worst of it in time. The misstepleft me feeling light-headed “un poco mareada”, but I had been feeling elated anyway. The avians and I had just tasted one of the few tranquil days in this reach of Argentina, which typically gusts 60 mph easy.
Since I temporarily didn’t have to hold onto myself, maybe I confused my sense of balance. However, my equipment remained secure in my daypack. I ascended, back to camp to warm up and eat. The menu announced itself inwardly. Griddle pancakes with lots of butter and jam… hot chocolate…handfuls of cashew nuts… then tea.
Upon arrival at camp, I felt intuitively that a muscle spasm would be the worst case scenario. The doc told me when you suffer a sprain, the affected muscles may shrink and have reduced blood circulation. Pain then occurs. Injured muscles may also wrench or seize up. He added that section of my body until it improves. Pain medication is such a wonderful alternative to a sleepless, bummer night.
One of my friends mates had a slightly invasive disc procedure done to remedy a moderate-sized herniation of one of her vertebrae discs. It was performed by a pain medicine physician using laser tools to repair it. Methods have advanced for these types of pain interventions and include collation tools (a type of radiofrequency energyenergetic) and high pressure water jets. There is now this amazing invention called Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy (IDET). A specialized endoscope allows tools to be inserted into the discs for pain relieving repairs.
These sorts of other world concerns began to elude me as I curled up in my sleeping bag to drift and dream through another Patagonia night. A magnificent world of birds around me: roosting flamingos, parrots, Andean Condors…to seek out tomorrow.
